Stag Beetle
Lucanus cervus

The adult stag beetle is found around old woodland, hedgerows, parks, and gardens where decaying wood remains available for its young. Adults feed mostly on tree sap, overripe fruit, and other sugary liquids, while males use their enlarged mandibles to wrestle rivals. They fly on warm summer evenings, often with a heavy, buzzing flight. Despite the fearsome antler-like jaws, the adult's main role is reproduction, and its above-ground life is usually brief.
