Stag Beetle Pupa
Lucanus cervus (pupa)

The pupa rests inside an earthen chamber made in soil or rotten wood near the larval feeding site. It does not feed, instead transforming the stored energy of the grub into the adult beetle's legs, wings, and enlarged jaws. Its best defense is stillness and a firm outer casing, though it can twitch when disturbed. The developing adult may remain underground after pupation before emerging in warm weather.
