Orange-tip Chrysalis

Anthocharis cardamines (chrysalis)

Orange-tip Chrysalis

Fastens to a plant stem or woody stalk with a silk pad and a supporting girdle, usually in rough grassland, hedgerows, or scrub. Does not feed, instead surviving on stored energy while the body reorganizes into the adult form. Its angular green or brown shape mimics a thorn or dry seed pod, giving strong camouflage through winter. This stage can remain in place for many months before emerging in spring.
