Eastern Box Turtle Juvenile
Terrapene carolina (juvenile)

Juvenile Eastern Box Turtles roam humid forest floors, thickets, and grassy openings, often staying near cover after rain. Their diet broadens to include earthworms, slugs, insects, berries, mushrooms, and tender vegetation. They are still more cautious than adults, spending much time buried in leaf litter or tucked under logs. The shell gradually becomes taller and stronger, improving the turtle’s famous ability to close itself away from danger.
