Eastern Box Turtle
Terrapene carolina

Adult Eastern Box Turtles are terrestrial turtles of forests, old fields, gardens, and moist woodland edges across the eastern United States. They eat a varied omnivorous diet including worms, snails, insects, carrion, berries, mushrooms, and leafy plants. When threatened, an adult usually withdraws into its high-domed shell rather than fleeing. Its hinged plastron can close so tightly that many predators cannot reach the head or limbs.
