Hermann's Tortoise Hatchling
Testudo hermanni (hatchling)

A newly hatched Hermann's tortoise stays hidden among leaf litter, grass tussocks, and low Mediterranean scrub. It feeds on tender weeds, flowers, and small bits of fallen plant matter while avoiding birds, mammals, and larger reptiles. Its shell is still small and relatively soft, so freezing in cover and withdrawing quickly are its best defenses. Hatchlings emerge from buried eggs and often spend their earliest days close to the nest area.
