Hermann's Tortoise Juvenile

Testudo hermanni (juvenile)

Hermann's Tortoise Juvenile

A juvenile Hermann's tortoise roams sunny scrubland, open woodland edges, and rocky meadows, becoming bolder as its shell hardens. It grazes on a wide variety of herbaceous plants, especially leaves, flowers, and seasonal shoots. Juveniles bask to warm up, retreat into vegetation during heat, and may scrape shallow shelters in loose soil. Their patterned shells help break up their outline among dry leaves and stones.
