Sardinian Warbler Hatchling
Curruca melanocephala (hatchling)
A newly hatched Sardinian warbler is a tiny, altricial chick kept hidden in a cup nest low in dense Mediterranean scrub. It cannot fly and spends most of its time crouched in the nest, begging when a parent arrives. Its diet is soft insects and other small invertebrates brought by the adults. The wide gape and urgent calls help guide feeding in the dim shelter of thorny bushes.
