Speckled Wood Caterpillar
Pararge aegeria (larva)
This green, well-camouflaged larva lives low among shaded woodland grasses such as false brome and cock's-foot. It feeds by chewing grass blades and often rests lengthwise along stems where its colour and shape are hard to spot. The small forked tail and fine body markings help break up its outline. In this species, some individuals can overwinter as caterpillars, helping produce the long adult flight season seen in mild regions.
