Lace Monitor Hatchling
Varanus varius (hatchling)

A newly hatched lace monitor is a small, alert lizard that stays close to cover in hollow logs, loose bark, and leaf litter within open forest and woodland. It feeds on small insects, spiders, and other tiny animals, using quick snaps and short bursts of speed rather than strength. Young hatchlings are vulnerable to birds, snakes, and larger lizards, so camouflage and climbing are essential defenses. Its bold banding already resembles the adult pattern, helping break up its outline against bark and shadows.
