Lace Monitor
Varanus varius

The adult lace monitor is a large arboreal and ground-foraging monitor lizard of eastern Australian forests, woodlands, and nearby farmland. It eats carrion, birds, eggs, reptiles, small mammals, and large invertebrates, relying on a keen sense of smell and a powerful bite. Adults climb expertly despite their size and often shelter in tree hollows or high branches. A notable behavior is raiding termite mounds to lay eggs, where the mound’s stable warmth helps incubate the clutch.
