Common Pochard
Aythya ferina

The Common Pochard is a medium-sized diving duck found on lakes, reservoirs, marshes, and slow wetlands across much of Eurasia. It feeds mainly by diving for aquatic plants, seeds, roots, molluscs, and insect larvae. Adults are strong swimmers and capable fliers, often resting on open water and escaping danger by diving or taking off in a rapid burst. A notable fact is that this species is sexually dimorphic, with males showing a reddish head, black breast, and pale grey body while females are browner and more cryptic.
