Common Pochard Duckling

Aythya ferina (duckling)

Common Pochard Duckling

Common Pochard ducklings stay close to sheltered freshwater edges, reed beds, and quiet lake margins soon after hatching. They feed by picking tiny aquatic insects, plant fragments, and other small food from the surface and shallows. Their downy plumage provides warmth but little real protection, so they rely on hiding, swimming, and quick dashes to cover. A notable fact is that diving-duck young are mobile and feeding themselves very soon after leaving the nest.
