Common Hawker Nymph
Aeshna juncea (nymph)

The nymph lives underwater in ponds, bog pools, ditches, and slow streams, often hiding among submerged vegetation or peat-stained debris. It is an ambush predator, feeding on mosquito larvae, small aquatic insects, tadpoles, and other tiny water animals. Rather than swimming constantly, it waits still and shoots out its extendable lower lip to seize passing prey. This aquatic stage can last for several years in cooler northern habitats before emerging to transform.
