Common Hawker
Aeshna juncea

The adult Common Hawker patrols moorland pools, acidic bogs, forest rides, and lake margins, often ranging far from the water while hunting. It catches small flying insects on the wing, using large eyes, agile flight, and spiny legs to intercept prey in mid-air. Males repeatedly patrol territories over breeding waters, while females lay eggs into damp plant material or moss. A notable feature is its strong, restless flight, allowing it to remain active even in cool, breezy northern weather.
