Blue Jay Hatchling
Cyanocitta cristata (hatchling)

A newly hatched Blue Jay is blind, mostly naked, and confined to a twig-and-root cup nest in a tree or shrub. It relies entirely on its parents for warmth and food, especially soft insects and other protein-rich morsels. Its main behavior is gaping and calling when vibrations or shadows signal an arriving parent. Even at this helpless stage, its loud begging calls can reveal the nest to predators.
