Northern Lapwing Juvenile
Vanellus vanellus (juvenile)

A juvenile Northern Lapwing is a fully mobile young bird of open fields, wet grassland, and muddy margins, with duller plumage and a shorter crest than an adult. It probes and pecks for worms, beetles, larvae, and other small invertebrates while learning to forage across exposed ground. It can run quickly and begins using stronger wingbeats as flight develops, but it is less bold in defense than a breeding adult. Its scalloped upperparts provide useful camouflage among clods, tussocks, and stubble.
