Lime Butterfly Caterpillar
Papilio demoleus (larva)
The caterpillar lives on citrus and other rutaceous plants in gardens, orchards, and scrubby edges. Young larvae often resemble bird droppings, while older larvae turn green and feed openly on leaves. When disturbed, a soft orange osmeterium can be pushed out behind the head, releasing a strong smell that discourages predators. Its main job is rapid feeding, storing enough energy for the pupal stage.
