Chimney Swift Hatchling
Chaetura pelagica (hatchling)

A newly hatched chimney swift stays in a dark chimney, hollow tree, or similar vertical cavity on a shallow nest held together with sticky saliva. It is bare to lightly downy at first and depends completely on adults for meals of tiny flying insects. Instead of perching on branches, it grips rough vertical walls with small feet and stiffening tail feathers as it grows. A notable early skill is clinging securely to the nest site even before it can fly.
