Eurasian Sparrowhawk Nestling
Accipiter nisus (nestling)

A Eurasian Sparrowhawk nestling stays hidden in a stick nest built in woodland, relying entirely on its parents for warmth and food. It feeds on small pieces of bird flesh torn from prey brought back by the adults. At this stage it can beg loudly, crouch low, and peck defensively, but it cannot yet fly or hunt. Its downy feathers are gradually replaced by juvenile plumage before it begins leaving the nest.
