Great-tailed Grackle Hatchling
Quiscalus mexicanus (hatchling)

A newly hatched Great-tailed Grackle is an altricial nestling, mostly naked at first and completely dependent on care in a cup-shaped nest built in trees, reeds, or urban plantings near open ground. It cannot fly and spends its time crouched low, begging loudly when adults arrive with insects and other soft foods. At this stage its main defenses are stillness, rapid growth, and the concealment of the nest. One notable fact is that hatchlings grow quickly enough to begin feathering within days, preparing for an early move into the fledgling stage.
