Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucus

This large swallowtail butterfly lives in deciduous woodlands, parks, gardens, and forest edges across eastern North America. Adults sip nectar from flowers such as milkweed, thistle, and lilac, while females search for host trees including tulip tree, wild cherry, and ash for egg-laying. It flies with strong, graceful wingbeats and often visits damp soil to take up minerals. A notable feature is that some females are dark instead of yellow, resembling the unpalatable pipevine swallowtail.
