Common Cockchafer
Melolontha melolontha

The adult is a large brown scarab beetle found around hedgerows, orchards, gardens, and woodland edges, especially on warm spring evenings. It feeds on leaves of trees and shrubs and flies with a loud, clumsy buzz after dusk. Hardened forewings protect the delicate flight wings folded beneath them. Its fan-like antennae are especially prominent in males and are used to detect mates.
