Common Cockchafer Larva
Melolontha melolontha (larva)
This white, C-shaped grub lives underground in meadows, lawns, fields, and open woodland edges. It feeds mainly on roots, moving slowly through the soil with strong chewing mouthparts. The larval period can last several years, making this the longest and most damaging life stage for plant roots. When disturbed, it curls tightly and relies on the shelter of the soil rather than speed.
