Northern Mockingbird Hatchling
Mimus polyglottos (hatchling)
A newly hatched Northern Mockingbird is nearly naked, blind, and entirely dependent on warmth and food from its parents. It stays deep in a shrub or small tree nest in open neighborhoods, thickets, or woodland edges. Its diet is delivered in tiny portions, mostly soft insects and other protein-rich invertebrates. A notable feature is its loud begging gape, which helps parents find and feed it quickly.
