Blacklegged Tick
Ixodes scapularis

Adult blacklegged ticks inhabit wooded, brushy, and grassy areas, especially where deer and other mammals pass through. Adults quest higher on stems and shrubs than younger stages and attach to larger hosts such as deer, dogs, and humans. Females take a large blood meal before laying eggs, while males mainly seek females on the host. The reddish-brown adult female becomes much larger and paler when engorged with blood.
