Dice Snake
Natrix tessellata
Adult dice snakes are semi-aquatic colubrid snakes found around lakes, rivers, canals, wetlands, and rocky shorelines across parts of Europe and western Asia. They mainly hunt fish and amphibians, often swimming with the head above water before diving or lunging at prey. They are non-venomous and usually defend themselves with hissing, musking, flattening the body, or feigning death. Females often grow larger than males and may travel to warm, loose soil or compost-like sites to lay eggs.
