Dice Snake Juvenile
Natrix tessellata (juvenile)

Juveniles spend much of their time along sunny banks, reed beds, and slow-moving water where small fish and amphibian larvae are abundant. They are stronger swimmers than hatchlings and often forage at the water’s edge or just below the surface. When threatened, they usually dive, freeze among patterned stones, or release foul musk rather than bite. Their checkered pattern helps break up their outline against gravel and rippling water.
