Giant Toad
Rhinella horribilis

The giant toad is a large, warty amphibian of tropical lowlands, forest edges, farms, and gardens, usually staying on land but breeding in ponds, ditches, and slow water. It is mostly nocturnal, sitting still and snapping up insects, worms, small vertebrates, and other prey with a rapid sticky tongue. When threatened, it inflates its body and relies on powerful toxins from enlarged parotoid glands behind the eyes. Its tadpoles and eggs are also chemically defended, helping this species persist in many disturbed habitats.
