Northern Bobwhite
Colinus virginianus

A small ground-dwelling quail of grasslands, old fields, farms, pine savannas, and shrubby thickets. It forages on seeds, leaves, berries, and many insects, especially during the breeding season. Its main defense is concealment, followed by a sudden explosive flush on whirring wings when danger comes too close. A notable fact is that the clear whistled “bob-white” call gives the bird its common name.
