Northern Bobwhite Chick
Colinus virginianus (chick)

A downy, ground-running chick of open fields, grasslands, and brushy edges, usually keeping low among cover. It feeds mostly on tiny insects and other soft invertebrates, with some small seeds as it grows. When threatened, it crouches and freezes, relying on mottled brown-and-buff down to blend into dry vegetation. A notable fact is that it is precocial, leaving the nest soon after hatching and able to walk and peck for food almost at once.
