Common Bluebottle Fly Larva

Calliphora vicina (larva)

Common Bluebottle Fly Larva

A pale, legless maggot found in carrion, animal remains, and other moist decaying matter. It burrows through soft tissue and feeds with small mouth hooks, avoiding light and drying air. Its diet is mainly decomposing animal material, where it grows rapidly before leaving to pupate in drier soil or litter. The age of these larvae is often useful in forensic work for estimating how long remains have been exposed.
