Common Fruit Fly

Drosophila melanogaster

Common Fruit Fly

The adult is a tiny fly commonly found around fermenting fruit, sap flows, compost, and other yeast-rich food sources. It feeds with sponging mouthparts on liquid sugars and microbes rather than biting solid food. Adults move in short, quick flights and use wing vibrations during courtship displays. Females can lay eggs directly into suitable fermenting fruit, allowing the life cycle to restart quickly.
