Winter Moth Caterpillar
Operophtera brumata (caterpillar)
A small green inchworm found in spring on deciduous trees, hedgerows, orchards, and woodland edges. It feeds on tender buds and young leaves, especially of oak, apple, birch, and other broadleaf plants. It moves by looping its body and can drop on a silk thread when disturbed. Its hatching is closely timed with bud burst, and large outbreaks can heavily defoliate trees.
