White-breasted Waterhen
Amaurornis phoenicurus

An adult rail of marshes, mangroves, ponds, canals, wet farmland, and vegetated urban waterways, recognized by its white face and breast with dark upperparts. It walks and runs confidently over mud, floating plants, and water margins while probing for insects, molluscs, small fish, frogs, seeds, and tender vegetation. Although capable of short flight, it usually escapes by sprinting into dense cover, and its loud, repeated evening calls are a notable feature around wetlands.
