Wheel Bug
Arilus cristatus
The adult wheel bug is a large assassin bug found on shrubs, trees, gardens, and woodland edges. It hunts caterpillars, beetles, and other insects by waiting motionless, then stabbing prey with its stout beak. Adults can fly and may release a strong odor when disturbed. The raised cog-like crest on the back is its most distinctive feature and gives the species its common name.
