Hummingbird Clearwing Moth
Hemaris thysbe
The adult is a day-flying sphinx moth found around flower gardens, meadows, woodland edges, and open habitats with abundant nectar. It hovers in front of flowers and drinks through a long proboscis, often visiting bee balm, phlox, thistles, and other tubular blooms. Its clear wing panels and rapid hovering flight make it resemble a tiny hummingbird or bumblebee. Unlike the larva, the adult does not chew leaves and is built for fast aerial movement between flowers.
