Two-tailed Pasha
Charaxes jasius
A large, powerful-flying butterfly of Mediterranean scrub, woodland edges, and gardens where strawberry trees grow. Adults patrol sunny clearings, sip fermenting fruit, tree sap, and mineral-rich moisture, and often fly high and fast around shrubs and tree canopies. The larvae feed mainly on the strawberry tree, linking the species closely to maquis and evergreen woodland habitats. Its two hindwing tails and bold orange-brown wing pattern make it one of the most distinctive European butterflies.
