Eastern Newt
Notophthalmus viridescens

The adult Eastern Newt lives mostly in quiet ponds, marshes, and slow pools with abundant aquatic vegetation. It swims with its tail, hunts small aquatic insects, crustaceans, worms, and amphibian eggs, and often shelters among submerged plants. Adults retain toxic skin secretions, though their olive-green backs and yellow bellies are less flashy than the red eft stage. Breeding occurs in water, where males court females with tail-fanning displays.
