Eastern Newt (Red Eft)
Notophthalmus viridescens (red eft)

The red eft is the terrestrial juvenile stage of the Eastern Newt, often found walking through damp leaf litter in forests after rain. It eats tiny insects, mites, springtails, and other small invertebrates picked from the ground. Its vivid orange-red color warns predators of toxic skin secretions, making it one of the more conspicuous salamanders on the forest floor. This stage may wander for several years before returning to ponds as an aquatic adult.
