Nut Weevil Larva
Curculio nucum (larva)
A pale, legless grub that develops hidden inside a growing hazelnut. It feeds on the kernel, protected by the nut shell while it grows. When mature, it chews an exit hole, drops to the ground, and burrows into the soil to overwinter. Its secretive life inside the nut makes it hard to detect until the damaged nut falls early.
