Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillar
Papilio troilus (caterpillar)
This larval stage lives in deciduous woodlands, forest edges, and shrubby areas where spicebush and sassafras grow. It feeds on host-plant leaves and often rests inside a folded leaf shelter held with silk. Young caterpillars resemble bird droppings, while older ones turn green with large false eyespots that can startle predators. When threatened, it can evert a forked scent organ that releases a strong, unpleasant odor.
