Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly
Papilio troilus
The adult butterfly flies through moist woodlands, stream edges, gardens, and open clearings in the eastern United States. It feeds mainly on flower nectar, while males also visit damp soil to take up minerals. Its dark wings and green-blue hindwing sheen help it blend into shaded forest light. A notable feature is the row of orange spots near the hindwing edge, which helps distinguish it from several similar swallowtails.
