Giant Water Bug
Belostoma flumineum

Belostoma flumineum lives in ponds, marshes, and slow streams where it clings to submerged plants near the surface. It is an ambush predator, seizing insects, tadpoles, and small fish with strong raptorial forelegs before piercing them with a beak. Adults can fly between wetlands when conditions change, though they do most of their hunting underwater. A notable trait of this genus is paternal egg care, with males carrying developing eggs on their backs until they hatch.
