European Goldfinch
Carduelis carduelis

The adult European Goldfinch is a small, agile finch of open woodland, hedgerows, orchards, parks, and weedy fields across much of Europe. It feeds mainly on fine seeds, especially from thistles and teasels, using its slender pointed bill to pick food other finches may struggle to reach. Adults are active fliers that use quick turns, fluttering movements, and elevated perches during territorial disputes and courtship. Its bright red face and yellow wing bars make it one of Europe’s most recognizable finches.
