Devil's Coach-Horse
Ocypus olens
The adult is a large black rove beetle found under stones, logs, garden debris, and woodland leaf litter, especially in damp places. It is mostly nocturnal and preys on slugs, worms, and other small invertebrates with strong jaws. When threatened, it raises its abdomen like a scorpion and may release a foul-smelling defensive chemical from glands near the rear. Despite its short wing cases, it has folded hind wings underneath and can fly when needed.
