Devil's Coach-Horse Larva
Ocypus olens (larva)
This predatory larva lives in damp leaf litter, soil cracks, and beneath rotting wood. It hunts small invertebrates, seizing prey with well-developed jaws rather than grazing like many beetle larvae. Its long, dark body lets it push through narrow cover and stay hidden during the day. A notable feature is that it already behaves like a miniature ground hunter before gaining the adult's short-winged beetle form.
