Western Barbastelle
Barbastella barbastellus

The adult Western Barbastelle is a small European bat of mature woodland, old trees, hedgerows, and traditional buildings used as roosts. It hunts at night, taking mostly moths and other flying insects with rapid, quiet flight along woodland edges and gaps. Its broad ears meet across the forehead, giving the face a distinctive dark, pug-like look. It is notable for using unusually quiet echolocation calls, an adaptation that helps it catch moths able to hear many other bats coming.
