Black Soldier Fly
Hermetia illucens

The adult is a slender black fly often seen around compost heaps, livestock areas, and sunny vegetation near larval food sources. It flies in short, quick bursts while searching for mates and places to lay eggs, and it feeds little or not at all compared with the larva. Its wasp-like shape, pale leg markings, and active wing displays help discourage predators. Despite the mimicry, it has no sting and is not a biting fly.
