Black Soldier Fly Larva
Hermetia illucens (larva)
This pale, segmented larva lives in compost, manure, carrion, and other damp piles of decaying organic matter. It burrows and wriggles through the material while feeding heavily on rotting plant and animal remains. As it grows, it can convert food waste into body mass with remarkable efficiency. When mature, it often crawls away from wet food to find a drier, safer place to pupate.
